The geothermal aquifers of Vetren have been venerated as sacred healing springs since the Bronze Age. Indigenous Thracians established a sanctuary here to the Three Nymphs—the divine protectors of healing waters.
Following the Roman conquest of Thrace, Emperors Nero and Trajan formalized the complex into the fortified imperial city of Aquae Calidae (later renamed Thermopolis in Greek). The site featured monumental cold bath chambers (frigidarium), warm chambers (tepidarium), and hot steam pools (caldarium) fed directly by natural 42°C thermal conduits.
In 705 CE, Byzantine Emperor Justinian II ceded the thermal resort to the Bulgarian Khan Tervel in gratitude for military support. In 1206, Emperor Henry of Flanders led the Latin Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade in pillaging and burning the city to the ground.
Three centuries later, in 1562, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent visited the ruins seeking relief for his severe gout. Restored to health by the mineral waters, the Sultan commissioned a lavish marble-lined domed hammam directly over the Roman foundations, which still stands intact today.
